Goodbye To The Midnight Sun

Yesterday evening the sun set after 9 days in the sky.  For a couple of days now we have been steaming south from our final transect point, slowly moving out of the Arctic circle, towards the ship's harbour in Hirtshals, Denmark.

It stayed like that for an hour or so and then popped back up again.

The 'sunsets' on this trip have been truly amazing.  I purposefully chose the 3pm to 3am shift so that I would be awake during these times to appreciate the midnight sun.  The sun would often go near the horizon, but never dropped below it till yesterday.  It would linger leaving a beautiful sunset/sunrise glow, for over an hour, before starting its slow rise again.  Of course during the day it never got very high in the sky either.

Although I never really managed to get a clean shot of the sun up round midnight, because clouds kept getting in the way farther north, here is a selection of a few I have taken, on or around midnight:
